The Juilliard Department of Public Safety has taken proactive measures to address active shooter scenarios. Specifically, we employ uniformed NYPD officers to be in the building at certain times, and we are in close contact with Lincoln Center Security, which can provide additional security if needed. We have also upgraded the school’s emergency communication systems.
This section is intended to remind the Juilliard community of the protocol to be followed in the event that an armed individual would enter the building.
The response to an active shooter in the building is simple and unambiguous:
1. RUN: Find the nearest exit and leave the building immediately. Call 9-1-1 when you get outside. If running is not possible,
2. HIDE: Find a room or other discrete area in which you can remain out of sight. Lock or barricade the door, silence your mobile device, stay calm, and wait for the police to arrive. If and only if hiding is not possible,
3. FIGHT: Attack your assailant as forcibly as possible with anything that can be used as a weapon. Run away at the first opportunity, leave the building, and call 9-1-1 when you get outside.
Although this is a difficult and disturbing topic, it is best to be prepared. Always be aware of your surroundings and know the location of the nearest building exit. Report any behavior or actions that cause you to be fearful. Juilliard’s Department of Public Safety is available to answer any security questions or concerns, so feel free to approach any of our officers or staff members at any time.
